Finally trying the Lutterloh System

by Mellissa

I first heard about the Lutterloh system in my early 20s. Back then, I was learning more about sewing and always hunting for patterns. The idea of scaling tiny drafts into custom-sized garments fascinated me, but the cost of a full set kept it out of reach.

Over the years I picked up a few of the solo books, but never a full set with the special ruler you need to use them. I’d flip through the patterns, daydream a bit, then set them aside. Sometimes I debated buying the system new, but the styles felt a bit too mature for me at the time.

A few months ago I pulled one of the books out and found myself browsing the Lutterloh website. This time the designs caught my eye. They felt more modern, and I could see ways that my own style would fit with them instead of fighting against them. And after weeks of internal debate, I gave in and ordered the latest set. It arrived earlier this week, and I’m ready to finally try it for real.

Now the real question, what should I make first?

#150 – Chef’s kiss. 10/10 will make. I probably won’t do it in purple since my wardrobe tends to lean more towards a monochrome palette, but maybe this is the chance to start adding some color into my life. For the pants I am thinking a satin finish double knit or a ponte de roma and the blouse I am at a loss for ideas.

I keep going back and forth on both of these. Winter IS coming as House Stark says, and I should probably be practical… but I am a sucker for a good romper. Both of them hits right in that sweet spot, not baggy enough to look like a onesie, not tight enough to feel self-conscious. As for fabric, I would go with linen or maybe a cotton jersey.

Love both, equally. The pants are set to a length that I generally stay away from but that is an easy fix. The blouse would slide perfectly into my current wardrobe and will probably be made in something like a chambray, poplin, or even oxford. The dress is right up my alley too, since I do love a button-down dress. and I am thinking that I would use the same sort of material as the top or try for something a tiny bit lighter like a cotton lawn. Color-wise, I would keep to a neutral.

This one’s from one of my vintage Lutterloh books. I’ll be skipping the ruffle around the neck (I’m not a ruffle gal). I am thinking maybe in black silk satin or lace.

With winter on the way, 125 feels practical and cozy. I’m thinking interlock knit or ponte de roma. My only worry is whether the loose drape/turtleneck combo on # 124 would look dumpy on my figure.

I have a gorgeous bluish velvet that would be amazing for # 95. The only thing I’m unsure about is the single lapel. Can I add one to the other side? Or omit altogether? Also, is making a coat a little ambitious for my first official Lutterloh project?

Of course, Lutterloh recommends starting with the fitting pieces first and I will diligently do that, but let’s be honest, I’m not much of a vest person and I like having a bigger project to plan toward.

I would love your input. Which one should I make and what fabrics do you think would work?
